I understand what you are going through, It’s difficult, trying, and soul crushing to hoist yourself out of bed in the morning and slog your way to that job, every day, day in and day out.
And its not the journey in the car, bus, subway, bike or whatever, its the destination. The job – you may be good at it, you may make money doing it – but you don’t like it, and its not one day, but all the days added one-on-top-of-the-other, accumulating like a stress tower built on your shoulders. It doesn’t matter why you hate the job, you do you hate it and whatever the reason it is, its valid.
A career, in some ways, is very much like a relationship, maybe you need to turn up the heat, get a little kinky, shake up the routine, change positions, or roles? (not like that, pervert) maybe you need to create a new position for yourself within the existing corporate structure? There are options, and sometimes our self imposed misery gets in the way of fresh perspective taking. However, if all this fails, if you have indeed shifted and pivoted within the company or within your field and still would rather rip the skin off your face than go to work, then it’s time to find something new!
Really. I’m not kidding, none of us knows how long we have on this rock, but spending your time doing something you hate, with people you dislike, is (to use a medical term) nuts!
Don’t be the person who talks a good game, makes empty and idle threats to FINALLY leave the job and start that dream. Actually give it a go. Before you do, I have one item to cover with you BEFORE you jump.
Check the parachute.
Before you give your supervisor that speech you have memorized, check the bank account and make sure you have financial room to make this pivot, write a business plan, build a small team of outsourced help if need be, but plan and chart how long it will take you to break even, in a great market or a shit market, if you’ve got your T’s crossed: Do it. I’m behind you.
NOW, cue the commercial:
